Oral (PO) and enteral
Most commonTablets, capsules, liquids, suspensions, elixirs, lozenges. Convenient and inexpensive but absorption is variable.
Absorption pattern
- Varies greatly with stability, solubility, GI pH, emptying time, food presence
- Enteric-coated tablets and sustained-release forms — do not crush or chew
- First-pass effect through the liver reduces oral bioavailability
Nursing considerations
- Hold for NPO, dysphagia, vomiting
- Verify swallowing ability
- Check for crushing/splitting compatibility
